Founded in 1916, the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO) is an independent,
non-profit organization responsible for certifying ophthalmologists (eye physicians
and surgeons) in the United States. The mission of the ABO is to serve the
public by improving the quality of ophthalmic practice through a certification
and maintenance of certification process that fosters excellence and encourages
continual learning.
The Online Services Center is the portal for participation in Certification and Maintenance of Certification processes. To access the Online Services Center, you must login using your username and password supplied by the Board. Certification
July 15, 2008 is the Deadline to Register for the October 24-26, 2008 Oral Examination
All candidates eligible for the 2008 fall oral examination must register via the ABO web site by July 15, 2008. To register for the oral examination, candidates must log into the ABO web site using the username and password supplied by the Board. Oral session assignments will be mailed to all registered candidates in early August 2008.
Oral Examination Simulation Video: The oral examination simulation video is designed to provide an understanding of the oral examination format. The video features a simulated exam encounter that demonstrates questions and answers between an examiner and a candidate. Click here to access the video.
March 31, 2009 Written Qualifying Examination (WQE)
The deadline to register for the 2009 WQE is August 1, 2008. Late applications will be accepted until September 1, 2008. To apply for the WQE, candidates must log into the ABO web site using the username and password supplied by the Board. In March of every year, usernames and passwords are mailed to all candidates eligible to apply for the following years WQE. (Ophthalmology residency programs will be sent the usernames and passwords for those finishing residency.) Approved candidates will receive scheduling information in January immediately preceding the examination.

ABO Will Accept Late DOCK Registrations until August 1, 2008
The ABO has received several deadline extension requests from diplomates who missed the May 1, 2008 late registration deadline for the September 2-30, 2008 DOCK examination. Through an agreement with the test vendor, the ABO will accept late DOCK registrations until August 1, 2008. This extension represents the very last date the ABO will be able to accept a DOCK registration.
Please allow a minimum of five business days after registration to receive the DOCK appointment scheduling email from ACT.
Please note, late registrations are subject to less availability of desired test dates, appointments and locations. The fee for registering for the DOCK during the late registration period is $1075. To register for the September 2008 DOCK, diplomates must log into their MOC status page using their username and password. 2008 DOCK Appointment Scheduling Instructions Were Emailed to Registered Diplomates
On June 2, 2008 all diplomates who registered for the 2008 DOCK examination by May 1. 2008 were sent an email from ACT, our testing vendor, on how to schedule a test appointment at an ACT Center testing location. The earlier you schedule your appointment, the more likely you are to receive your preferred test location. You will receive email confirmation of your appointment.
The ACT test center network currently includes approximately 230 locations. You can view the current ACT Center locations at http://www.act.org/actcenters/locate/index.html.
