MOC for Non Time‐Limited Certificate Holders

Revised March 2016

There are 2 options for non time-limited certificate holders to participate in MOC.

“Fast Track” MOC

Non Time-Limited Certificate Holders who must recertify quickly for licensure or credentialing purposes can participate in the MOC “Fast Track” Process, by completing the MOC components listed below, within a three-year timeframe:

  • Fees: Pay $1,000 twice – once at Part 3 registration and once at Part 4 registration. Non Time-Limited Certificate Holders who complete the MOC “Fast Track” Process will have satisfied their MOC fees for the next ten years.
  • Part 1: Professionalism & Professional Standing: Hold a valid and unrestricted license to practice medicine at all times.
  • Part 2: Lifelong Learning & Self‐Assessment: Attest to completion of 250 AMA PRA Category 1 CME Credits™ obtained during the past 10 years.
  • Part 3: Assessment of Knowledge, Judgment & Skills: Pass the Demonstration of Ophthalmic Cognitive Knowledge (DOCK) examination.
  • Part 4: Improvement in Medical Practice: Complete an approved activity. You may choose to design your own quality improvement program, participate in a multi‐specialty improvement program, or complete an online Practice Improvement Module.

Upon successful completion of these steps, Non Time-Limited Certificate Holders will earn a new voluntary certificate, valid for 10 years, and will be listed as "Participating in MOC" on the ABO's public Verify a Physician tool. If Non Time-Limited Certificate Holders complete the MOC “Fast Track” Process, their MOC fees are paid for the next ten years.

Certificate Issuance

The ABO issues certificates twice per year:

  • January 1 (if MOC activities are completed by December 31 of the previous year) and
  • July 1 (if MOC activities are completed between January 1 and June 30)

Annual MOC Enrollment

Non Time-Limited Certificate Holders who hold certificates issued prior to 1992 and wish to voluntarily enroll in the annual MOC Track 2 process and earn the public reporting status of Participating in MOC must complete the components listed below, over a 10-year process:

  • Fees: Pay $200 annually. The annual fee is in lieu of individual activity registration fees. (Track 2 diplomates pay the same total amount for MOC as Track 1 diplomates.)
  • Part 1: Professionalism & Professional Standing: Hold a valid and unrestricted license to practice medicine at all times.
  • Part 2: Lifelong Learning & Self‐Assessment: Every two years, attest to the completion of at least 50 CME, including 16 credits of Self-Assessment CME, and attest to completion of one Patient Safety Activity prior to Year 3.
  • Part 3: Assessment of Knowledge, Judgment & Skills: Complete the DOCK examination once between years 6 and 10.
  • Part 4: Improvement in Medical Practice: Complete two approved activities—one between Years 1-5, and a second between Years 6-10. You may choose to design your own quality improvement program, participate in a multi-specialty improvement program, or complete an online Practice Improvement Module (PIM).

Non Time-Limited Certificate Holders engaged in this process will be listed as "Participating in MOC" on the ABO's public Verify a Physician tool. Diplomates who successfully complete the 10-year process will earn voluntary recertification.
