The Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS), a provision of the Affordable Care Act, offers participating physicians an incentive payment equal to 0.5% of their estimated total allowed charges for covered Medicare Part B services.
Additionally, physicians participating in PQRS have the opportunity to receive an extra incentive payment of 0.5% by participating in a PQRS-approved Maintenance of Certification program (PQRS: MOC).
The American Board of Ophthalmology's MOC program has been vetted and approved by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for this incentive.
In accordance with PQRS rules, to qualify for the extra incentive payment, diplomates must meet the requirements of the MOC program AND participate in the program more frequently than is required for the calendar year.

The American Board of Ophthalmology is pleased to announce the release of its new Practice Improvement Modules (PIMs), which satisfy the Part IV: Practice Performance Assessment requirement of Maintenance of Certification (MOC).
PIMs are available to all ABO diplomates as an additional MOC activity or as an alternative to the Office Record Review (ORR); however, completion of PIMs is not required for diplomates in 2012.
The PIMs require chart abstraction, review of feedback, development of an improvement strategy, and re-abstraction of charts to evaluate practice improvement in relation to ophthalmic processes and/or outcome measures.
