Participating in Maintenance of Certification (MOC) provides assurance to the public and to the medical profession that ABO-certified physicians continue educational activities, keep current in information and skills, and practice in a contemporary and safe manner. MOC components are designed to assess the knowledge, experience and skills requisite to the delivery of high standards of patient care in ophthalmology.
The Board strongly encourages all diplomates, regardless of certification year, to engage in MOC. The ABO presently reports on its public website whether diplomates are participating in MOC, regardless of certification year.
- If you were certified prior to 1992, your non-time-limited certificate is not affected by participation in MOC. Voluntary participation in MOC demonstrates to your patients a willingness to commit yourself to the highest standards of care. Non-time-limited certificate holders interested in starting MOC may choose from the MOC Fast-Track Process or the annual enrollment pathway.
- Former diplomates whose certificates have lapsed may be eligible to rejoin the ABO diplomate community through MOC. Completion of the MOC Fast-Track Process allows former diplomates to obtain a new certificate valid for 10 years.
