Focused Practice Designation in Retina

Update: June 2025

Nearly two years ago, at the request of the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS), the American Board of Ophthalmology began the development of a Focused Practice Designation (FPD) in Retina. The ABO is grateful to the ASRS for initiating an exploration of how this credential might benefit retina specialists, and above all, the patients they serve.

Approximately 500 retina specialists responded thoughtfully to an ABO survey distributed in June, with compelling comments offered both for and against the development of this credential. And when diplomates speak with sincerity and conviction, the American Board of Ophthalmology listens. The survey made clear that there is insufficient consensus within the retina community, from the ABO’s perspective, to move the initiative forward at this time.

As a certification organization, it is the ABO's responsibility to “get it right,” and to balance the needs of the profession with the complexities of upholding the public trust. We apologize to those of you who are disappointed by this decision but please know that the ABO remains open to revisiting this collaboration should perspectives shift and the FPD credential can serve as a purposeful solution for the public and the profession.

We value your voice in this evolving conversation and encourage you to make your views about a Focused Practice Designation known to ASRS leaders and/or to the ABO, and we respect the vital role you play in setting high standards for our profession.
