The American Board of Ophthalmology participates in the ABMS Portfolio Program, which helps support physicians in obtaining Continuing Certification credit for their engagement in quality activities. The ABMS Portfolio Program, a service provided through the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), works with all types of health care organizations to recognize the work physicians are already doing to improve their practices and the care of their patients. It offers an option for organizations to support physician involvement in local improvement initiatives and award physicians improvement credit.
The Portfolio Program promotes organizational effectiveness and efficiency through team-based improvement initiatives that are directly related to a physician's practice and influences the patient care delivered. This program promotes improvement within a physician’s home institution and patient population.
Benefits of Participation
In addition to providing convenience in completing improvement activities, the program provides:
- An alternative method for obtaining Continuing Certification credit
- Ability to collaborate with other ABMS member specialty boards on improvement projects
- An opportunity to interact with leading organizations involved in quality improvement
- Engagement with approved portfolio sponsors supportive of physician involvement in Continuing Certification
- A pathway to improve patient outcomes and promote improvement in your home institution
Recommended Ophthalmic Projects
In an effort to encourage participation among ophthalmologists through the ABMS Portfolio Program, the American Board of Ophthalmology recommends that participating diplomates consider the following types of organizational projects:
- Medication errors and practice access issues
- Wrong site surgery/wrong choice surgery/inappropriate surgery
- Low vision-related safety issues (e.g., falls in the elderly, driving issues)
- Professionalism (e.g., ethical practice, COI issues, confidentiality, cultural considerations)
- Practice-based learning & improvement (e.g., patient/staff safety, error reduction, management of adverse events, QI culture, lifelong learning strategies)
- System-based practice (e.g., intelligent and appropriate resource use [office testing, consultants, neuro-imaging], evidence-based medicine, medico-legal issues)
- Diagnostic errors (e.g., system errors, educational/knowledge deficiencies, communications failures, poor histories, poor records/documentation, cognitive biases)
